Tapioca Flour

Tapioca flour originates from the cassava plant, also known as yucca root, where the tapioca is extracted. It derives from Brazil originally, however is widely used throughout the world as an excellent replacement for other flours during baking things like homemade bread.

What is Tapioca Flour?

Tapioca flour is not the same as tapioca starch, however it derives from the same plant.

The main difference is that tapioca starch has been taken from the starch of the plant whilst the root is used to make the flour. Tapioca starch is often used as a thickener in stews and soups and acts in the same way as cornstarch. Tapioca flour is naturally gluten free and has a smooth appearance, similar to plain white flour, and provides a chewy texture and crisp edge to bread making. It is almost a pure carbohydrate with no fat content and free from sugar. It is arguably one of the best flour substitutes for gluten free baking as it performs in the same way as wheat flour and produces some amazing end results when it comes to baking.

Over the years tapioca flour has become a staple ingredient in the kitchen. From cake and bread making, to bases for healthy homemade pizzas this versatile flour is easy to work into some of your favourite recipes. Tapioca tastes mildly sweet and is very low in calories making it a great flour substitute compared to the likes of traditional plain white flour, which has almost three times the calories. Other forms of flour tend to be highly processed, tapioca flour however has minimal processing to create the end result resulting in a very low in fat, zero sugar flour.

Tapioca flour does not have any protein, fibre or essential vitamins and minerals in the same way other flour substitutes may have but is a popular choice for those on a low fat, low calorie or low fodmap diet.
