What we have already done

Our warehouse is powered by solar electricity

We currently generate a large proportion of our electricity from solar panels on our warehouse. For the winter months where there is less sun, any electricity that we have to buy, we get from 100% renewable sources.

Reduced our plastic usage by 35%

As mentioned already, we know this is not nearly enough, but it's a start and we are happy to have been able to make some reductions.

Saved 1,200 miles of plastic tape a year

As part of our reductions we have also reduced plastic tapes, partly by changing plastic tape to paper, and also by printing boxes with "Fragile" so that we don't have to use "fragile" tape.

We have raised £15,411.08 for the charity Plastic Oceans UK

Along with the help of our customers, we have raised £15,411.08 for Plastic Oceans UK to help support the fantastic work they are doing.

For us, it's important not only to try to reduce the impact that our business has on the environment, but we also want to do what we can to help the problems caused by plastics that are already polluting our planet.

We have been certified as a 100% Carbon Neutral company.

We have been a carbon neutral organisation for several years already, (helped by our usage of solar panels and renewable energy). But this year we were independently assessed, and certified to be a Carbon Neutral Company

We know Plastics matter to you, and they do to us too

We are on a mission to remove all plastics from our business, and while we have already removed plastics from our box packaging, this is still a way away from where we want to be.

For the last 2 years we have been tirelessly researching new packaging options which are both sustainable & eco-friendly.

We are very excited to announce after a lot of rigorous testing we are on the verge of having compostable packaging for our products.

If keeping plastics out of our environment is as important to you as it is to us, and you want to know when our compostable packaging is available, please enter your email address below:

Why has it taken so long to reach this point?

We would love nothing more than to already be using plastic-free compostable packaging. However, this is not from lack of trying.

Our two biggest challenges to overcome have been:

1) Bio-degradable and compostable are not the same. While some other retailers offer bio-degradable packaging, this can actually be worse for the environment, as it breaks down into micro plastics, which are a lot harder to remove from the environment and can therefore cause even more damage than regular plastic.

This is why we are not happy unless we have a fully compostable option. This mean it will break down completely.

2) Some of the available compostable packaging options are not strong enough for our products or weight. Many are intended for smaller items which are then in a cardboard box for added protection to the fragile packaging.

We have tested numerous options along the way, but unfortunately every time it has failed our standards testing at some point. We put these standards in place to ensure you get a high quality and safe product.

Some of our customers have actually already received some of our products in compostable packaging without realising it.

After running our internal testing, we have then tried testing compostable packaging in actual customer orders.

However, during this testing of various packaging, we were getting a lot of breakages, which was leading to food waste & extra transporting to replace damaged products, which is not only a hassle for the customer, but also it obviously is damaging to the environment in itself.

It’s a fine balance to make sure we don’t do more harm than good, and to make sure every decision we make is truly sustainable & eco-friendly.

A lot of companies will take the easy route which projects a good impression from the outside, but is actually damaging (such as using biodegradable plastics that do a lot of harm).

We want to take actions that actually help the environment.

Paper packaging

We often get asked about using paper for our products. We currently have some of our flours packed in paper packaging and we are looking to expand these lines to include more of our flours.

However, as many products need a barrier to keep air out of the packaging to stay fresh, we cannot use paper for many of our products for this reason. We would not be able to ensure quality and freshness, which could also lead to food waste.

However, we will be looking to use this option more where we can.
