Gut Health
Having a healthy gut can be vitally important to our health and wellbeing but how do we achieve a healthy gut? There are a vast amount of articles online and informative podcasts about how you can improve your gut and how important it can be for a strong immune system, brain function and even mental health.
What is Gut Health?
Gut health refers to the state of your gut and how healthy it is. There are many signs and warnings that you may have an unhealthy or unhappy gut which are important to take note of. These signs could be but are not limited to upset stomach, IBS symptoms, changes in weight, fatigue and food intolerances. The gut can be aggravated by stress and lack of sleep, which can prevent us from digesting food adequately and causing issues in the body. Our gut acts as a second brain and can be highly affected by mental health and wellbeing, which can in turn cause adverse effects. This can be why when we are nervous we experience butterflies in the stomach.
Gut Health Foods
Is it possible to heal your gut through nutrition? There are many articles from health professionals that argue that we could potentially start to heal our gut through our diet from particular foods. These foods include lots of fibre through fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes and grains, and introducing more fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kombucha, kimchi and kefir which all contain good bacteria. Itis important that on a daily basis where possible, that we consume a healthy mix of probiotic and prebiotic foods. Shop from the two categories below to find out more information about each but here is a little insight as to what each food category means:
-
Probiotic Foods
Probiotics are live microorganisms that are highly important for keeping a healthy gut due to their high number of health benefits for your body and brain. Rather than opting for a probiotic supplement, it is better for us to receive these important nutrients through consuming the correct foods. Probiotic foods are fermented foods that provide our gut with friendly bacteria, these foods often consist of dairy products such as yoghurt or kefir, sauerkraut or kimchi, miso and kombucha - all of which are continuously growing in popularity since we are starting to learn more about what it means to look after our gut health.
-
Prebiotic Foods
Prebiotic foods are packed full of dietary fibre, which help to feed the good bacteria in your gut and ultimately lead to a much healthier digestive system. There are a number of foods you can try to increase the fibre in your diet without even noticing, these foods often include inulin, oats, dandelion, flaxseed and vegetables such as onion, garlic, artichokes, asparagus, leeks and even bananas and apples! High fibre foods should be part of every meal that we sit down to eat, this could not only improve digestion but can also improve your overall health.
