Alfalfa, also known as Lucerne or Medicago sativa has been grown for years as a type of feed for farm animals and livestock. It is a natural source of food that it highly nutritious and perfect for feeding livestock. It has a vast amount of benefits to humans and is often used to fortify baby food.

Alfalfa seeds are used for sprouting, which is easy to do at home and a great way to start producing your own fresh salad and vegetables. They tend to sprout within 7 days and require little attention to help the growth of alfalfa sprouts. When alfalfa is sprouted it produces a number of vitamins and minerals and are a fantastic way of boosting your daily intake of nutrients.

Are Alfalfa Seeds Good For You?

Alfalfa seeds are a fantastic source of essential vitamins and minerals including calcium, vitamin C and the highly important vitamin K. Vitamin K helps build and maintain healthy bones and is necessary for the normal structure of the bone. It is often used to help with health conditions such as high cholesterol.

Ways To Use Alfalfa Seeds

Alfalfa sprouts can be used in a variety of ways to boost the nutritional value of a healthy meal. You can eat them in their raw form (washed thoroughly) or stir into cooked vegetables.

  • Sprinkle on top of you favourite salads
  • Make an open sandwich with rye bread, smashed avocado and top with alfalfa sprouts
  • Stir in to stir fried vegetables for a healthy stir fry
  • Add to your favourite sandwich filling along with lettuce, tomato and cucumber for a great way of adding vegetables to each meal.

How To Sprout Alfalfa Seeds At Home

  1. Place 1 tablespoon of alfalfa seeds into the bottom of a container or mason jar
  2. Adda round 2 inches of water on top of the seeds (enough to cover the seeds)
  3. Cover with a cheesecloth and leave to soak for 8-12 hours overnight
  4. Drain the water through the cheesecloth and top back up with water before draining once again
  5. Place jar of alfalfa seeds in a dark, dry and warm location
  6. Rinse alfalfa seeds/sprouts every 8-12 hours for 3-5 days until fully sprouted
  7. Your alfalfa sprouts will grow to around 1-2 inches long, once they have sprouted move to direct sunlight to activate the enzymes
  8. Wash thoroughly and store for 2-3 days in the fridge.
